October 26 The Dangers of Extremism – Either direction!
63 years later.
October 22 Were you born between the 1930’s and 1970’s? You’ll get a chuckle out of this. Here's to US!!!!
No matter what our kids and the new generation think about us, WE ARE AMAZING !!!! OUR LIFE IS LIVING PROOF !!!!
To Those of Us Born 1930 - 1979 At the end of this email is a quote of the month by Jay Leno.. If you don't read anything else, please read what he said. Very well stated, Mr. Leno.
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.
As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes. Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight.. WHY? Because we were always outside playing...that's why! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.. No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were OKAY. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We did not have Play stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good. While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were. Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ? ~ The quote of the month is by Jay Leno: 'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'
For those that prefer to think that God is not watching over us...go ahead and delete this. For the rest of us...pass this on. October 16 Employers asking for your login name and password to social networking sites! That’s right. Some employers are now asking for your credentials to get into your social networking sites. Here is a clip from an article: Last June, the city of Bozeman, Mont., became notorious when it implemented a policy that required anyone applying to a city job to hand over logins and passwords for any social networking sites they used. We're not just talking about Facebook and MySpace, either. They wanted access to chat rooms and forums frequented by applicants. After people made a fuss about the invasive policy, Bozeman officials backed down and decided to adjust their application requirements. That type of interview requirement doesn't seem to have caught on with other employers. Then again, Victory Christian School in North Augusta, S.C., recently announced it wants its students to hand over the same information if they might be acting in a way not in line with the school's policies. Perhaps job seekers should expect to experience these demands sooner than later. Naturally, questions arise: Is this legal? What if I don't hand over my information? What's the point to all this? To finish reading the whole article go to: http://tinyurl.com/Employer-wants-FB-pswd Please give us some feedback. What do you think about this? We’d love to know. (We think it is outrageous.) October 07 Computer Security Basics – For BeginnersI used to tell my clients and friends about the Microsoft On-line videos and hadn’t thought about them in quite a while. Then this morning I ran across them and thought I would share them with you. If you want to know some basic information on what viruses, worms, trojans etc are and how to keep you PC safer, notice I did not say SAFE, then watch these two videos. They are short and “user-friendly. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/videos/securityoverview-hi.html http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/videos/Updates/UpdatesHi.html If you would like more information about this stuff go to: http://www.microsoft.com/protect/default.aspx Have blessed and safer computing day! October 06 Advice to all my readersAs a member of our Community Emergency Response Team, a FEMA sub-group, I receive notices from the FBI on terrorism threats etc. Part of the threat warning system also discuss items involving cyber-security. This morning I received the following item: The FBI is warning the public to be aware of three new fraudulent e-mails that are currently in circulation. One claims to contain "Intelligence Bulletin No. 267;" another purports to be from the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI Counterterrorism Division; and the third claims to contain an FBI intelligence bulletin from the Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate. Do not click on any links contained in these or similar e-mails; they are hoaxes and may contain viruses or malicious software. Please do not forward this item. However, if you wish to provide a link to friends and family you may use the following: http://thecomputerguysllc.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!3E351816740E32BA!2207.entry Have a great day and watch out for fraud attempts. They are rampant. Dennis Wilson The Computer Guys LLC P.S. Have you made a backup of your documents and pictures lately? If not, do so now. October 01 Try Using Good Search for your Search Engine and help your favorite cause!Have a favorite charity? Would you like to donate to them simply by surfing the web? It’s true. You can have your favorite charity receive donations every time you search for anything. Below is a little snippet from their website: We all have a cause we care about - whether it's finding a cure for cancer, saving the environment, finding homes for abandoned pets or so many other worthwhile endeavors. But what we don't all have is the time or money to support these efforts as much as we'd like. So, what if we could raise money for our favorite charities and schools by doing something we do every day — searching the Internet? That's the question Ken Ramberg (the former founder of JOBTRAK, now a division of Monster.com) and JJ Ramberg (an MSNBC anchor and the former Director of Marketing at Cooking.com) asked themselves a few years ago. After realizing what a fraction of the $8 billion generated annually by search engine advertisers could do if it were directed towards organizations trying to make the world a better place, they launched GoodSearch in 2005. GoodSearch is a search engine which donates 50-percent of its revenue to the charities and schools designated by its users. It's a simple and compelling concept. You use GoodSearch exactly as you would any other search engine. Because it's powered by Yahoo!, you get proven search… For more detail go to: http://www.goodsearch.com/about.aspx Dennis “The Computer Guy” Wilson |
