    Million Dollar Hard Disk Drive

I read an interesting story today that some of my readers might be interested in.

A employee using their own personal laptop in business, was building a very successful sales network in multiple states.  Again, he was furnishing his own laptop and own software tools.

He was growing disenchanted and thinking of leaving.  His employer then stole his laptop and erased the hard disk drive.

The former employee sued and won a judgment of $17.5 million!

    Rock-a-Bye Baby

Years ago when our kids were little I saw a plaque with the following poem and bought it for my wife.  I post it here for all current moms in hopes they see it and keep the thoughts in mind!

    Rock-a-bye Baby

    (by Ruth Hulbert Hamilton
    adapted by Wendy Lyn)

    Cleaning and scrubbing
    can wait 'til tomorrow
    For babies grow up,
    we've learned to our sorrow.

    So quiet down cobwebs,
    Dust go to sleep,
    I'm rocking my baby
    and babies don't keep.

Interesting Power Point Show about our Universe

I have added a Power Point show that is pretty interesting albeit, not really extremely useful.

I don’t know who originated it and I have not checked on the accuracy of the information in it, but I believe it to be accurate.

    I hope you enjoy it.

Talking about What to do with all that old electronic gear?

What to do with all that old electronic gear?

I am sure you have some sort of electronic gear laying around the house, in your attic or garage that is no longer of any use to you.  You want to get rid of it, but what do you do with it?  You cannot just throw it in the trash as most of it is classified as hazardous waste.

Well now there is a solution that won’t cost you a dime.

A new company in town, GreenWorks Recycling, LLC will take your old junk for free and they’ll dispose of it properly.  Basically they will take anything that has had electrical current running through it.

However, if you either do not wish to take it there yourself, or you want us to make sure the hard disk drive is wiped clean before it goes there, you can bring it by our shop and drop it off for a small fee.

What is the best Anti-virus or Internet Security Suite

This is a really big question and one I get fairly often.  So, I decided to Blog about it so that I don’t have to re-write this answer so often.  (I’m basically lazy!)

First of all let me state clearly THERE IS NO ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY 100% EFFECTIVE ANTI-VIRUS SOLUTION.

The only sure way to protect your PC from infection is abstinence. What?  That’s right, never ever get on the Internet and never ever allow anyone to stick anything in your PC.  (OK, you can quit laughing now.)

Ok, so that isn’t realistic.  So, I’ll list some alternatives:

    1. Install a Windows Home Server and add all your PC’s and laptops to the network.  If your system gets trashed it is a very simple matter to restore an IMAGE.  Yes, an IMAGE of your computer is updated every night and you can “time travel” back to the day before.  It completely reinstalls EVERYTHING.  It will be as though nothing ever happened to your PC.  (We can install this type of server in your house or small office for less than $1,000 including hardware and labor and it can keep an image of up to five (5) PC’s.) (You will still need some type of anti-malicious software system to scan each night.)
    2. You could install a (NAS) Networked Attached Storage Device in your home or small office and have ALL data files, i.e. music, photos, MS Office documents, financial data etc., stored on the NAS. Then install MS SteadyState on your PC’s and laptops.  Then you don’t even have to install or run any protection because every time you reboot your PC it goes back to the way it was.  This solution can be a bit of a hassle though because you have to turn off steadystate every time you want to make a change to your PC and then remember to turn it back on.  (Solution number 1 above is a better solution.)

If neither of the above solutions sound like something you want to do then we have found the following to be mostly effective.  And you must do all of them:

    • Install ClamWin and configure it to update and scan daily. Also, set it to automatically quarantine any suspected file.  This software is completely free and legal.  http://www.clamwin.org
    • Install and accept all the defaults for MS Home Defender. Again, free and legal.
    • Install and run Malware Bytes.  They have both a free and paid version.  http://www.malwarebytes.org/index.php
    • Be sure your Windows Firewall is on, unless you have a router.  Modern routers include Firewall protection.
    • Install all Microsoft updates and patches including Internet Explorer 8.  (Just running Firefox is not a guarantee against infection.)

If you would like our assistance, of course we are available.

A Few Tips for the Non-Techies who read this blog:

Recently I had a situation where someone had purchased an old laptop off e-Bay for around $300 and it came with Windows ME on it.  They then spent additional funds getting it “upgraded” to Windows XP.  Later it quit working altogether.   So they ended up with around $500 in a very old non-working laptop.

This situation made me realize that there may be others who might be trying to find really good deals on used laptops and desktops and need to have a little advice.

    • Never buy a laptop that is more than five (5) years old period. No exceptions.
    • Never buy an old laptop or desktop that has Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows 2000 on it.  Again, no exceptions….especially Windows ME.
    • If your PC is running a lot slower than it used to, don’t just toss it.  Sometimes a minor tune-up can bring it back to or close to its original speed.
    • If your computer suddenly flashes a message on your screen telling you it is infected and to pay $$$ to have them remove it… someone is trying to trick you into paying them to remove something they did to your PC in the first place.
    • Never ever download music from file-sharing sites.  Think of this as unprotected sex….whatever viruses, worms and trojans they have will pass to you.  This is known as ITD’s, Internet Transmitted Destruction stuff.
    • Do not just throw old computers, monitors etc in the trash.  This stuff is classified as hazardous waste.  There is a firm in town now that will allow you to drop off all old electronic junk and they are a certified recycling firm.  They will destroy your hard drive too so you don’t have to worry about identity theft.  (Or for a fee you can bring it by our shop and we’ll wipe the hard drive for you and take it to the recycling firm for you.)
